the stand. he still has not cross examined any of them. nbc's mark potter is outside the courthouse in texas. he joins us. mark, that was one of the other points of outrage for some people is that hasan would be in a position to cross examine some of the very people he's accused of shooting down that day. he's not done so so far. what else are you seeing in court today? >> reporter: well, aside from the argument you were talking about, it will go to an appeals court, it was very dramatic testimony as soldiers and former soldiers took to the stand to describe what happened on november 5th, 2009, when 13 people were killed here, 31 were injured in this rampage shooting at a processing center. soldiers, former soldiers told of seeing others being shot, hearing them scream, watching them die, being shot themselves. it was very, very dramatic. one of them, staff sergeant michael davis, said that he heard a young woman screaming out, my baby, my baby, my baby. and we know that a 21-year-old soldier, francesca velez, private first class from chicago was shot and killed. she was nine weeks pregnant.

psychiatrist admitted he opened fire at the texas army base in 2009, killing 13 people and wounding 30 others. casey stiegel is live at fort hood, texas. casey, hasan still not cross-examining his witnesss? >> reporter: , no, patti ann, he is isn't. i was in the courtroom. i had a chance to study him. he looked down at the table most of the time. when the judge addresses him he is very respectful, yes, ma'am, no, ma'am. but as these witnesses are giving gut-wrenching testimony, he mostly stairs at the table and doesn't make any kind of eye contact with them. major hasan had a relatively bizarre interruption of court yesterday. it came during some of the most horrific testimony we heard thus far. the sergeant who supervised the medical facility where the shooting happened was on the stand. she was in middle of describing a scene of non-stop gunshots and chaos, when hasan randomly interrupted and objected asked please be reminded she was under oath. clearly she was under oath. she had already sworn in. so everyone kind of moved on. when it comes to the cross-examination of these witnesses not r

in the hills of west texas. it's about 2,000 feet elevation, not sure exactly where in west texas it is, but it's out about 2,000 feet. it's supposed to stand 200 feet tall when it's done. this clock is supposed to keep time for 10,000 years. apparently the plan is that every year for the next 10,000 years, this clock keeping time will go off like a cuckoo clock and play a fresh new sound every year for 10,000 years. it is being built. it was dreamed up by some big thinkers. there are famous big thinkers that are on the board of this project like the great brian eno. they've been working on this in some capacity since 1996. in west, texas, so far it has cost tens of millions of dollars. the man who has put up at least $40 million of the money spent so far on this clock is the man whose signature you'll find here at the bottom of www.10000yearclock.net. if you can't read that, it is jeff bezos, the founder of amazon.com, he's the deep pockets behind this 10,000-year 200-foot tall project in a west, texas, mountain project. i learned this in a profile of jeff bezos in the "wall street journal." arises when a couple married in california or another state moves to state like florida or texas that does not respect their marriage. until we succeed in getting rid of the remaining marriage bans in these states it's clear those governments will not recognize the couple that is married and they will get some but probably not all of the federal benefits they would get if they were living in a state that respected their marriage. at administration has been coming out with guidance on various benefits since the decision came down so we have some answers at this point. it seems pretty clear for immigration purposes, the 70-thre federal government will respect the marriages that were married in any jurisdiction that allows it no matter where the couples live now. federal employees will be able to get spousal health insurance and other benefits if they're legally married in any state regardless where they currently live. same for military spouses. so we have some clarity on some of these issues. the two big ones that are sort out of out standing and waiting for guidance from the admi

accused of gunning down soldiers in fort hood, texas. nidal hasan is facing a number of charges for the shooting that killed 13 and injured 32. his backup lawyers have now been asked to withdraw from the case. they say his son is working with the prosecution to achieve the death penalty. hasan is representing himself. he's asked few questions of the witnesses who saw the 2009 attacks. some of them who were shot by hasan. >>> in the meantime up to boston we go where the jury is still deliberating in the racketeering trial of james "whitey" bulger. the jury must sort through stacks of evidence, including crime scene photos, forensic images, guns, even bulger's informant file. the alleged mob boss is accused of 19 murders along with a number of counts of extors torgs and money laundering. >>> the maryland general assembly created a task force on juvenile court jurisdiction. they're meeting today and the whole reason is is to begin looking at the laws on dealing with young criminals, including how to reduce the number of kids in adult detention centers and prisons. a final report

of texas where a violent shooting spree kills four people and leaves four others including two boys hurt this morning. police say one man now behind bars is responsible for two shootings, one in dallas and one just seven miles away in desoto. police say the gunman opened fire inside a home in dallas about 10:30 last night. when police got to the scene, they found four people with gunshot wounds. two were pronounced dead right there. authorities say the same man fled to nearby desoto where he opened fire wounding two others. lerlene smith says her daughter and granddaughter are among the dead. >> i came back in, went to mia's room, and that's where i found her mother lying in the doorway. everything he was throwing. i don't know what he was doing. hopefully they didn't suffer long. >> so sad. smith says the shooter was her daughter's boyfriend. he was arrested at that second scene. no word yet on the condition of the other four victims. >>> oakland police continue to gather information as they look into the disappearance of sandra coke. officers left her home with two bags of evidence yes
